Our Team

Christopher M. Eckert, M.S., CCC-A

Senior Licensed Audiologist

Christopher M. Eckert is an Audiologist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated with honors in 1996. He has been helping individuals improve their hearing and their lives for over 22 years. Christopher has extensive experience at practices such as the VA Clinic, ENT clinics, and other private clinic environments. It is his love of sound and his passion for helping individuals and families that led him to join Hearing Unlimited. Here, he takes pride in the patient-focused culture and personal care the office and staff provide.

Christopher Eckert is a committed member of several local and national hearing associations and organizations. As a licensed audiologist and member of the Hearing Loss Association of Pittsburgh, Christopher has provided many self-care and educational programs centered on the importance of hearing health. He has given many self-help and educational hearing presentations to the Hearing Loss Association of Western Pennsylvania (HLAP), as well as actively served on the board. This involvement has deepened Christopher’s knowledge of his patients’ everyday hearing struggles and has encouraged him to incorporate this knowledge into helping every Hearing Unlimited patient.

He loves helping people learn how to preserve their hearing and helping those with hearing loss improve their hearing. When he’s not working, Christopher enjoys reading and spending time with his family.

Q. If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive) who would it be?
A. I would love to have one more dinner with my Nannan Eckert.

Q. Which is your favorite sports team?
A. My favorite sports team is whichever team my children are currently playing on.

Q. What is your favorite food?
A. I could eat sushi every night of the week.

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A. On my bucket list is to see the Aurora Borealis (northern lights), so this would mean traveling to somewhere in high latitude regions.

Q. What is your all-time favorite tv show/series?
A. One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting around the television with my parents and siblings watching CHEERS on Thursday nights.

Stacy Malavite, Au.D., CCC-A, F-AAA, CDP

Director of Clinical Operations

Dr. Stacy Malavite is a Doctor of Audiology who has been with our team since 2014. She has worked in many different settings over her 20 years as an audiologist, including hospitals, ENT practices, hearing aid manufacturers, and private practices. She has had the privilege of training new hearing instrument specialists and new audiologists who are just entering the field. Her goal is to always help more people find treatment for their hearing loss and understand how treating their hearing loss will improve their quality of life.

Dr. Malavite is an educator at heart. While in college she fell in love with audiology. She is passionate about educating everyone she sees about hearing health and how it affects overall health. She wants others to have the best quality of life that they can have. She enjoys training and educating the providers at Hearing Unlimited and patients about the connection between hearing health and cognitive decline.

When not at work, Dr. Malavite enjoys being with her three children. She can also be found at volleyball matches, dance recitals, concession stand duty, or traveling to see her older children in Ohio or Florida.

Katelyn Hill, Au.D., CCC-A, F-AAA, CDP

Doctor of Audiology | Patient Engagement | Provider Services Manager

Dr. Katelyn Hill joined the Hearing Unlimited team in 2015 after completing her clinical rotations in various settings, including hospitals, schools, and private practices. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Thiel College; her Master of Arts in Audiology from the University of Pittsburgh; and her Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), and a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP).

Dr. Hill has always loved helping people and technology. With Audiology, she can impact people’s lives for the better by helping them communicate with family and friends and provide overall stimulation to the brain to help reduce the risk of dementia. She loves getting to meet different people and learning about their lives and stories. Her clinical interests include diagnostic testing, adult amplification, assistive listening technology, and hearing protection. Dr. Hill oversees the telehealth and remote care division at Hearing Unlimited.

Dr. Hill is a native Pittsburgher. She loves listening to music and going to theater productions, as well spending time with her husband, daughter, and son.

A. My grandfather, who passed away when I was a baby.

Madison Eskew, Au.D., CCC-A, CDP

Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Madison Eskew earned her Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences Disorders with a Minor in Special Education from James Madison University. She continued on to earn her masters and Doctorate of Audiology degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and a Certified Dementia Practitioner.

Dr. Eskew has worked with adults and children at ENT clinics, hospitals, and private practices. She has also completed a year-long audiology externship at the Pittsburgh VAMC. She enjoys watching her patients’ faces light up when they’re able to hear their loved ones for the first time in years.

Outside of work, Dr. Eskew enjoys exercising, reading thrillers, and exploring new restaurants.

Sydney Polifrone, Au.D., CCC-A

Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Sydney Polifrone earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2017. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Audiology degree from East Carolina University in 2021. While in graduate school, she completed her clinical rotations in a variety of environments, including the VA, a hospital setting, public school, and ENT. She has experience working with patients of all ages.

When she was in graduate school, Dr. Polifrone originally wanted to be a speech therapist, so she studied communication sciences and disorders. Further into her college years she realized the hearing side of the field was calling to her. She shadowed an audiologist on the college campus clinic and fell in love with the career after seeing just a few patients. Now, she loves helping people realize their best potential in communication with family and friends again. She enjoys meeting new people and hearing their stories every day.

Dr. Polifrone enjoys reading fiction, watching true crime shows, going to baseball games, and traveling. She is getting married in August and will be honeymooning in Italy. Be sure to ask her about the trip!

Todd M. Saxon, H.I.S.

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Todd is a PA state licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist. He started in the hearing industry in 2010 with a National Retailer. After a short stay there, he provided hearing care within Vision Centers in the Pittsburgh market before starting his own in-home sales and service company in 2014. He then joined the Hearing Unlimited team as a House Call Provider in 2018.

Todd has always wanted to help others. His mother and niece both have hearing loss, so choosing to help people through better communication seemed to be a perfect fit. He finds great enjoyment out of helping his amazing patients who are unable to travel to one of our offices.

Todd is married to his best friend and they have 5 wonderful children and a Shih Tzu. He loves traveling, spending time with family, attending his children’s soccer games, watching football, and enjoying a good glass of bourbon on the patio. Todd’s favorite movie is Pulp Fiction and his favorite vacation spot is Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Amber Hertzog, BC-H.I.S.

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Amber joined the Hearing Unlimited team in 2011 as an Office Manager. After six months she knew the hearing field was her calling and that she could help others. In 2013 she became an Audiology Technician and in 2015 she became a Hearing Instrument Specialist. In 2022 she became Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. She loves helping people and believes everyone should be able to hear clearly.

In her free time, Amber enjoys crafting, going to sporting events, visiting the casino, vacationing, being in nature, picking wildflowers and berries, skiing in the winter, swimming in the summer, and making memories with her family. She is also an animal lover and enjoys being with her fur babies.

Janis Forsythe, H.I.S., A.S.

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Janis earned her associate degree in science and is a certified Hearing Instrument Specialist. She has been in the hearing industry for 31 years and almost nine of those years have been spent at Hearing Unlimited. During her career, she has worked for five different companies all related to hearing aids. As a provider, she does many things that focus mainly on helping people advance with hearing aid technology that best suits their needs.

At the age of 30, after both her children were in school, Janis decided to further her education. She went back to college for nursing but found it wasn’t for her. She later found a job working for a local hearing aid company as a secretary. The provider and owner saw something in Janis and encouraged her to become a Hearing Instrument Specialist. She now enjoys helping and educating patients every day and encouraging individuals to take care of their hearing health.

Janis loves to travel when she can but she especially loves being with family, going to her grandson’s hockey games, family gatherings and picnics, and enjoying yearly vacations. As she is getting closer to retirement, Janis has realized that all of the people she has helped during her career have given her a sense of pride and made her understand that what she does is not a job, but an opportunity to help people every day to better their quality of life, one person at a time.

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Sherry is a licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist who has been a part of our team for over 10 years. She came to the audiology field because her mother is a Deaf interpreter. Growing up, she was always around people who wore hearing aids. Her mother is able to help people communicate through sign language and Sherry can help people communicate with hearing aids. Now, she loves interacting with her patients on a daily basis and helping them hear better.

Sherry loves to vacation, bowl, and spend time with her family, friends, and dogs.

Robert L. Conrad, BC-H.I.S.

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Robert has been involved in the medical field his entire life. His older sister was a quadriplegic from birth and he would go to almost every appointment with her. It gave him a great feeling to see a specialist have the answers or solutions to help her. In 2014 he became licensed to help those with hearing loss. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is a level 1 and 2 Certified multi event coach in track and field.

Since a young age Robert has enjoyed helping anyone the best way he can. Seeing his own family receive so much help and a better quality of life pushed him to become a specialist himself. He loves to have the knowledge, technology, and ability to help almost everyone that is in need to not only hear better but do better for their brain health. One of the best feelings for Robert is when patients come for a check-up and tell the story of how they were able to hear their spouses, grandkids, family members, and friends so much clearer.

Robert is blessed to have an amazing wife, three boys, and a fourth boy on the way! Every day is always about the family. He also breeds Great Danes and has four of them.

Lacy Smiesko, H.I.S., D.C., CDP

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Dr. Lacy Smiesko attended Penn State University for her undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Shortly after, she attended graduate school in Dallas, TX, earning her Doctor of Chiropractic. She has been working in healthcare since 2009. Her most recent experience ranges from the Dallas VA Hospital to private practices in Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Smiesko enjoys working with patients of all ages. Her primary interests include diagnostic testing, tinnitus relief, hearing protection, and assistive listening technology.

In 2022, a client introduced Dr. Smiesko to Hearing Unlimited. While shadowing, she learned that treating hearing loss could help prevent cognitive decline. She is an advocate for prevention and was eager to join the team as an Audiology Apprentice. Since then, Dr. Smiesko completed her Hearing Instrument Specialist certification and continues to study best practices to prevent cognitive decline. She loves educating her patients on the importance of treating hearing loss early for the best outcomes.

In her free time, Dr. Smiesko enjoys going on dates with her husband, playing bingo, golfing, and visiting family in Florida. She is also a veterinary chiropractor and has helped many animals with chiropractic therapy. She has always loved helping people and pets.

Erik Cornell, SLP

Apprentice & Speech-Language Pathologist

Erik is a Speech Language Pathologist working in the geriatric field for over 25 years. He is focused on helping the elderly communicate effectively following a medical crisis. Erik has both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology with a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA).

Erik left the field of Speech Pathology because he wasn’t able to properly help his patients due to insurance restrictions. At Hearing Unlimited, he is now able to spend the time he needs with each patient to assure their best result. Erik has always wanted to help people communicate effectively and he enjoys being able to help people with hearing deficits communicate with their loved ones.

Outside of work, Erik enjoys playing with his dogs, reading mystery novels, and playing stimulating brain games.

Hal B. Frohlich, BC-HIS

Training and Development Manager

Hal is board-certified in hearing instrument sciences but serves as our Training and Development Manager. He has been with the Hearing Unlimited team for over a decade treating patients. He worked with CQ Partners for a couple years as a Hearing Healthcare Consultant, traveling across the United States before rejoining our team. 

Hal came to the hearing field as he was looking for a career change that would allow him to give back to the community that had supported him for so long. He enjoys reconnecting people to their family and friends; and now he is able to impact patients on a cognitive level as well. 

Hal enjoys spending time with his wife and boys. Together they stay active biking, hiking, and kayaking. He also enjoys cooking for his friends and family.

Sarah Smith, MCD, CCC-SLP

Apprentice | Speech-Language Pathologist

Sarah is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist with experience in both speech pathology and audiology. She holds an undergraduate degree in speech and hearing as well as a master’s degree in speech pathology. She has been in the medical field of speech pathology for seven years and has extensive experience in head and neck trauma and surgery.

Sarah was the head Speech-Language Pathologist in a voice and swallowing clinic and a specialist in dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients. Helping others communicate and maintain their close friendships and ties with family is a passion of Sarah’s. She loves that Hearing Unlimited allows her to practice quality-of-life care that helps patients get the most of their connections with others. Her background in speech pathology offers her a unique take on patient care.

Sarah enjoys working on professional projects and traveling both domestically and internationally. She has a hard of hearing dog and a deaf cat who she loves. She is willing to try anything new and enjoys getting out of her comfort zone.

Krista Pietropola

Hearing Instrument Specialist Apprentice

Krista holds an MBA and spent the last couple years building a clientele in which she helped add financial structure to their lives. She was inspired to join the hearing field because of her sister, Mia, who was born profoundly deaf. Audiology has been a passion of hers and she is grateful to now be able to help patients experience better hearing. 

Krista loves seeing her patient’s reaction when they put their hearing aids in and their faces light up with happiness. She is always ready to listen and find a solution for her patients that leaves them feeling satisfied. The passion and energy she feels towards her work is something she has never felt but craved. Krista is ecstatic to be working at Hearing Unlimited and she looks forward to making a difference in the lives of her patients. 

In her free time, Krista can be found at Franklin Regional High School coaching the girls’ basketball team as the assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach. If she’s not at basketball, she is more than likely on an adventure or spending time with her family.

Matt Melnyk

Apprentice

Matt earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh. During his studies he worked at an assisted living facility gaining experience in patient care. After he earned his degree, he spent time in various sales positions in Pennsylvania and Colorado before he came back to Pittsburgh to join the Hearing Unlimited team.

Matt came to the field of audiology because of his close relationships with family members who have dementia. He wants to help others prevent a dementia diagnosis for as long as possible. Working with patients and keeping them connected with their families and friends is the ultimate fulfillment for Matt. He enjoys getting to know each patient and their families and he does his best to ensure hearing aids are in the best working condition for each patient.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys the outdoors, kayaking in the summer, snowboarding in the winter, watching sports, and cheering on all the Pittsburgh teams.

Chrissy Cole

Director of Finance

Chrissy has over nineteen years of experience in hearing healthcare and has been with our team since 2004. She plays an integral role, helping to lead our dynamic team as we seek to improve health and wellness through better hearing, as well as overseeing the financial health of the practice. Chrissy loves being able to work with our team members to help each of them grow in the workplace.

Chrissy enjoys spending time with her grandkids and traveling as much as possible.

Annette Snyder

Director of Office Operations

Annette joined the Hearing Unlimited team in 2009. Before accepting the position of Director of Office Operations in August 2020, Annette was the Front Office Operations Manager for four years. During that time, she assisted the Director in overseeing and training the office managers at all 5 locations. She also assisted in the development and implementation of the front desk and scheduling training programs for all office managers to ensure the skill set and capabilities of all customers facing the office managers are consistent throughout the organization.

Annette has an associate degree in business management and years of experience in office settings. Hearing loss runs in Annette’s family and she wanted to pursue a career in helping people with their hearing loss. She finds it very rewarding to witness how people’s lives are changed when hearing aids are placed on them for the first time. They can finally hear things that they couldn’t hear in the past.

In her free time, Annette enjoys running/training for upcoming races locally and in other states. On the weekends, she and her husband, Rob, enjoy going out on the Harley to get some wind time and taking the street rod to car cruises. She also enjoys spending time with her mom and her pups, Nova and Zeke.

Kathy Cottone-Brown

Director of Patient Operations

Kathy is our Director of Patient Operations and has been with the practice for nearly 10 years. She came to the field of hearing healthcare because her father has hearing loss. She wanted to learn more about those needs and hearing concerns, and what better way to learn than from an Audiology group. Now, she enjoys being part of a team that helps patients with their hearing needs and betterment of their quality of life.

Kathy enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, reading, and traveling to some of her favorite spots in Florida.

Joyce Bradley

Front Office Operations Manager

Joyce has been with our team for four years as the Front Office Coordinator. She is responsible for scheduling appointments and making sure everything runs smoothly for our patients. She enjoys seeing patients hear sounds and voices they have not heard in years as well as seeing family members’ expressions after their loved ones receive the gift of hearing again.

In her free time, Joyce loves being with her granddaughters and watching classic movies.

Gretchen Troutman

Front Office Coordinator

Gretchen has been with our team for almost 10 years and has a background as a Medical Assistant. She has worked in the front and back office in OB/GYN and Podiatry before coming to Audiology. The hearing field chose her as she has a passion for helping people. She loves working for a company that is so family oriented and flexible.

In her free time, Gretchen enjoys watching her youngest son play soccer. Whenever her kids are in town, she enjoys being with them and hanging out with friends, as well as cooking and baking.

Front Office Coordinator

Kathy has been with our team since 2020 as an Office Manager. She enjoys greeting and getting to know our patients. Kathy enjoys spending time with her three children and her granddaughter.

Stephanie has been with the Hearing Unlimited team as a Front Office Coordinator since 2018. She came to our team through a friend who thought she would be a good fit, and she was right. Stephanie enjoys being able to help patients and working alongside her coworkers.

Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys hanging out with her dogs.

Tawnya Clark

Front Office Coordinator

Tawnya is the Office Manager for the North Huntingdon location. She holds a legal secretary degree and court stenographer degree. She has worked for ophthalmology doctors in the past and has experience as a unit clerk in an emergency room. Before coming to the hearing field, Tawnya worked in the legal field at one of the biggest law firms in Pittsburgh and for one of the largest construction companies in the area.

Tawnya knew she wanted to do something different so she applied at Hearing Unlimited. She immediately clicked with the team and knew it was the right fit. She loves helping people and knowing patients leave the office satisfied brings her great joy.

Tawnya spends most of her free time with her family. She also loves going to Pens and Steelers games, concerts, the beach, and she is a huge hockey fan.

Hailee Jantz

Front Office Coordinator

Hailee recently joined our team in 2023 after being referred by a friend. As the Front Office Coordinator, she helps patients get checked in for their appointments and welcomes everyone who steps through our doors. She loves getting to know patients better as well as her fellow team members. Seeing a patient come out of the test rooms in tears because they can hear again is the highlight of her job.

Hailee likes to hangout with friends, family, and her animals. She also loves going on beach vacations.

Angie Wezorek

Patient Care Coordinator

Angie has been with our practice for over 15 years. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University and an impressive work history. Angie is a former elementary school teacher and worked as the Director of Consumer Affairs at a department store. Her experience in both teaching and customer service gives her the ability to connect with patients and help them when they come in for appointments. As a hearing aid wearer herself, Angie can personally relate to patient’s concerns. She enjoys helping others, scheduling appointments, and working with her co-workers.

Senior Patient Care Coordinator

Melissa has been with our team for almost five years as a Patient Care Coordinator. She has both her associate and bachelor’s degrees in business administration-management. Melissa is a helper by nature and finds this role to be the perfect fit for her because she gets to spend each day helping new patients start their journey to achieve better hearing. She finds it amazing to see first hand how the team at Hearing Unlimited works together to care for each and every patient as if they were our own family.

In her free time, Melissa loves hanging with her 12-year-old daughter and her little black Chihuahua, Wanda.

Jennifer recently joined our team as a Patient Care Coordinator. She is looking forward to starting and helping patients any way she can. In her free time, Jennifer loves to be with her children.

Beth Barbis

Patient Care Coordinator

Beth is one of our Patient Care Coordinators. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Robert Morris University. With a background in retail and having successfully run her own small business, Beth has honed her customer service and interpersonal skills. Recognizing the fulfillment she received from connecting with individuals and understanding their needs, she sought a career shift that would allow her to contribute more directly to people’s well-being. This desire led her to explore opportunistic roles with a stronger customer-facing element.

Beth entered the hearing field driven by a desire to contribute to bettering people’s lives. Coming from a customer service background, she recognized the impact of positive interactions on individuals. She loves working at Hearing Unlimited as it allows her to talk to and help people every day. She finds it rewarding to be a crucial link in the process that helps individuals on their journey to better hearing.

In her free time, Beth runs a small photography and illustration business, where she shares her art at local shows around Pittsburgh.

Patient Care Coordinator

Brittany is one of our Patient Care Coordinators. She has extensive experience in customer service, helping individuals both over the phone and in person. Her experience has given her interpersonal skills and helped her find ways to relate to others. She has always had a passion for helping people; it’s what she loves to do. Now, she is able to develop personal connections with patients. She loves being a part of the Hearing Unlimited team.

In her free time, Brittany loves to read, take care of her houseplants, and explore new restaurants.

Administrative Coordinator

Susie has been with our team since 2015 as an Administrative Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and genuinely enjoys helping others. She loves the people she gets to work with and being a part of a team that is dedicated to providing better hearing healthcare.

Outside of work Susie enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Administrative Coordinator

Janet has been with our team since 2017 and does a variety of tasks. From handling payments to insurance claims and billing to reports and marketing, she helps out wherever she can. Although Janet works behind the scenes, she enjoys how supportive and encouraging everyone on the team is.

In her free time, Janet enjoys reading, being with family, finding unique places to explore around PA, WV, and OH, and going antiquing.

Physician Development Coordinator

Cheryl has been with our team for almost a decade and has over 18 years of experience working in the administration field in medical practices. From front desk to accounts payable to a medical assistant position, Cheryl has experience in a variety of roles. She has always loved office work and enjoys being able to contribute her organizational skills to a team. The flexibility of her position and being on a team that takes pride to provide outstanding healthcare to all patients is the best part of her job.

Cheryl loves spending time with family, playing with her grandchildren, and viewing the world through their little eyes, as well as spending time with her besties and traveling. She is also blessed to have an amazing and supportive husband to share life’s journey.

Taylor has been with our team for over seven years. She enjoys helping patients understand their insurance benefits and is always ready to assist. If you have any questions about your insurance or you need help understanding your bill, Taylor is here for you.

Hearing Unlimited is a proud member of the Pittsburgh community. We support and make regular donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and participate in their annual fundraising walk every year. During the holidays we participate in the Gift of Hearing, where we will donate hearing aids to someone in need.
